I just came across some interesting government statistics on the use of social networking sites in Britain (via the Textdepot). The report was released by the British Office of Communications and "seeks to understand how people are using social networking sites as well as their attitudes to this form of communication". Speaking of social networking sites, Facebook just announced a new chat feature that allows users to communicate in real time.
